چکیده

We report on EUV spectroscopic observations of the B bright giant ǫ CMa made during the ORFEUS-SPAS II mission. We assess the performance of the instrument in the EUV and find that the effective area is roughly three times that of the EUVE long wavelength spectrometer and that the spectral resolution is λ/∆λ ≈ 1250. We identify most of the features, qualitatively compare different models, and examine the wind-broadened O V and Si IV lines, which display blue edge velocities up to 800 km s. Subject headings: line: identification — stars: atmospheres — stars: early-type — stars: individual (ǫ CMa) — ultraviolet: stars Based on the development and utilization of ORFEUS (Orbiting and Retrievable Far and Extreme Ultraviolet Spectrometers), a collaboration of the Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics at the University of Tübingen, the Space Astrophysics Group of the University of California at Berkeley, and the Landessternwarte Heidelberg.

We report on extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) spectroscopic observations of the B bright giant ǫ Canis Majoris made during the ORFEUS-SPAS II mission. Orfeus-ii Observations of the Ultraviolet-bright Star Barnard 29 in M13

The UV-bright star Barnard 29 in the globular cluster M13 was observed for 5300 seconds with the Berkeley spectrometer on the ORFEUS-SPAS II mission in 1996 November–December. The resulting spectrum extends from the interstellar cutoff at 912 Å to ∼ 1200 Å at a resolution of ∼ 0.33 Å. It shows numerous absorption features, both photospheric and interstellar, but no significant emission other th...

Electron densities, temperatures and ionization rates in two interstellar clouds in front of β Canis Majoris, as revealed by UV absorption lines observed with IMAPS

The spectrum of β CMa (Mirzam) between 1000 and 1200Å was recorded at a wavelength resolving power λ/∆λ ∼ 60 000 by the Interstellar Medium Absorption Profile Spectrograph (IMAPS) during its orbital flight on the ORFEUS-SPAS II mission in 1996. New information about interstellar absorption lines of C ii, C ii*, N i and O i from this spectrum are combined with the HST results reported by Dupin &...

The Berkeley spectrograph aboard the ORFEUS telescope made its second flight on the 14-day ORFEUS-SPAS II mission of the Space Shuttle Columbia in November/December 1996. Approximately half of the available observing time was dedicated to the Berkeley spectrograph, which was used by both Principal and Guest Investigators. The spectrograph’s full bandpass is 390–1218 Å; here we discuss its in-fl...

This paper presents the study of the interstellar medium toward β CMa, a disk sight-line known for its low neutral gas density. This study uses high and medium resolution HST-GHRS spectra including lines from the following species : H i, D i, N i, O i, S ii, S iii, Si ii, Si iii, Si iv, Al ii, Al iii, Fe ii, Mg i, Mg ii, Mn ii, C ii and C iv. The line of sight to β CMa (153 pc) is dominated by ...
